Classes & workshops

Welcome to our page dedicated to all the events, workshops and courses here at Edinburgh Patchwork.  To book a place simply call 0131 538 5030 or visit in person at the shop.  Each place is secured by full payment.  A material requirements and kit list will be provided by email, post or on the day of booking.

Where pre-cuts are required, we have a range of jelly rolls and other pre-cuts available in store (Bali Pops are currently on special offer!).

The times for classes vary, so please look at the details of a particular class for the start time and date. The shop opens at 10am. We appreciate that people may arrive early but in order to allow the staff and tutors to get set up for the day and for classes, it isn’t possible to let people into the premises before that. We appreciate your understanding on this.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included in the cost of the class but you will need to bring a packed lunch for the full day courses.

You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine but if you would like to use one of ours, just let us know.

Class sizes vary between 6 – 10 participants depending on the project.

There is ample on street pay and display parking, no charges on Saturdays, and a free space in front of the shop. People with reduced mobility get first dibs! Call ahead if you need the ramp.

SHARPS: We have a sharps bin in the shop – feel free to bring in your sharps for safe disposal.

Upcoming Courses for Spring 2017

10:15am – 4pm, Sunday 26th March, 2017. £45, excluding materials.

This class will include free motion quilting, applique for quilting using different types of thread, hand look quilting, pattern making, using decorative machine stitches and more. Pat Stone’s classes are fun and relaxed and packed with tips and trick and quilting wisdom. These classes are for quilters with some quilting experience who want to increase their skills. Places for Pat’s classes tend to sell out fast, so if you’d like a place, don’t delay!

CRAFTY STORAGE BASKETS (tutor Catriona Brown).

10:15 – 4pm, Saturday 18th March, 2017. £35, excluding materials.

This one day class will show you how to make two different versions of a fabric basket, one shallower and one higher with a draw string closure across the top. Both of these baskets are designed to use fat quarters allowing you to use some precious stashed fabric! We will cover a number of techniques including using different types of interfacing, binding the top of the basket and making a draw string closure. We will also explore attaching leather handles with rivets, we will supply the rivets and have a leather hole punch and hammer available allowing you to try out this fun and attractive bag handle technique. On the day of the class we will aim to complete one basket and make a start on the second if time allows. These baskets make ideal storage solutions for all your crafty projects or anything else you can think of.

HOUSES BLOCK (Tutor Alison Buckle).

10:15 – 4pm, Saturday 1st April, 2017. £35, excluding materials.

In this fun and relaxed full day class, we will be making a large ‘House’ block that can be made into a wall hanging or cushion. Alternatively, you can go on to make more blocks, which will go together to make a ‘Houses’ Quilt.

This project is good for using up scraps. This class will be more enjoyable if you are confident using a rotary cutter and can sew reasonably accurate 1/4″ seams.

WALDORF-STYLE DOLL-MAKING (tutor Hannah Sanguinetti).

10:15 – 4pm, Saturday17th & 24th June, 2017. £80, including doll materials but excluding material for clothes and hair.

This class runs over two full days and is for making a 32cm Waldorf-style cloth doll. These are beautiful, rounded dolls full of individual character and using all natural materials. The doll itself is sewn from special cotton stretch-jersey and shaped and stuffed with wool fleece. Materials for making the doll itself are included in the course cost but participants will need to provide their own fabric for clothes and yarn for hair. Suitable options for these will be discussed during the first class. Doll-making is a wonderful way of bringing together different textile crafts and the class will include some very basic needle-felting, embroidery and crochet along with machine and hand sewing.  Although this is a beginner doll-making class, experience with basic machine sewing and simple hand sewing is necessary.

2 – 4:45pm, Tuesdays. £4 per session.

Our friendly and relaxed paper piecing club will start up again on the 10th January, 2017. This is a drop in session but the club can be fairly full, so let us know if you would like to come along to avoid disappointment. Bring your own project or we can help you chose a project and we can make up paper pieces for you if you prefer not to hand cut your own. No experience necessary. This is not a taught class – help is on hand but participants are expected to work independently.

10:15 – 2pm, Wednesdays, £4.50 per session.

This is a relaxed and fun club where people can work on their own machine or hand sewing projects. It is a drop in session but the club tends to be quite busy, so phone in advance to check that there is space if you’d like to come.
