Classes & workshops

Welcome to our page dedicated to all the events, workshops and courses here at Edinburgh Patchwork.  To book a place simply call 0131 538 5030 or visit in person at the shop.  Each place is secured by full payment.  A material requirements and kit list will be provided by email, post or on the day of booking.

Where pre-cuts are required, we have a range of jelly rolls and other pre-cuts such as layer cakes and charm packs available in store.

The times for classes vary, so please look at the details of a particular class for the start time and date. The shop opens at 10am. We appreciate that people may arrive early but in order to allow the staff and tutors to get set up for the day and for classes, it isn’t possible to let people into the premises before that. We appreciate your understanding on this.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included in the cost of the class but you will need to bring a packed lunch for the full day courses.

You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine but if you would like to use one of ours, just let us know.

Class sizes vary between 6 – 10 participants depending on the project.

There is ample on street pay and display parking, no charges on Saturdays, and a free space in front of the shop. People with reduced mobility get first dibs! Call ahead if you need the ramp.

SHARPS: We have a sharps bin in the shop – feel free to bring in your sharps for safe disposal.

Upcoming Courses for Autumn 2017

CHINESE LANTERN QUILT (tutor Alison Buckle).

10:15 – 4 pm, Saturday 14th October, 2017. £35, excluding materials.

In this class we will be making a Chinese lantern block. I’ve adapted this traditional block to make it Jelly Roll or Bali pop friendly and it uses every last scrap, so it’s a great pattern for that extra special set of 2 1/2” strips that you’ve been saving. You can choose between the lap quilt or double bed size. We will focus on the process of making some of the blocks and you will be able to finish the rest of the blocks at home.

NEW YORK BEAUTY CUSHION COVER (tutor Lindsay Tilston).

10:15am – 4pm, 28th October, 2017. £30, excluding materials.

A fun relaxed workshop on how to make New York Beauty blocks. The full day workshop will be based around learning the skills of foundation piecing and curved piecing working towards making a cushion front [as pictured], or you can later make a up a number of blocks into a quilt.  We will aim for everyone to complete at least one New York Beauty block which is a quarter of the circle and speedy sewers may get through several blocks [the cushion needs 4 in total]. Suitable for quilters with some experience looking to try out new techniques.

(There will be a ‘finish your cushion class’ on the 2nd of December that will more fully explore finishing cushions, such as inserting zips, piping and accessorizing cushions).

10:15am – 4pm, Saturday 4th November, 2017. £35, excluding materials.

This full day class will show you how to make a cushion with a simple design but lots of impact and style. We will start by making a very simple pieced top that emphasises the fabric rather than complicated patchwork. Then we’ll stabilise this with iron on interfacing instead of quilting for a more modern look; it also saves time! Then we’ll make a back for the cushion including a zip covered by a flap, this is a great technique that makes your cushions look much more professional. Next comes the pop of colour, using piping cord and either ribbon or fabric strips we will make our own piping. We’ll then cover joining your cushion together with the piping for a beautiful, shop-bought look. This class will allow you to make a lovely cushion on the day but will also teach you valuable techniques that will elevate your cushion making to the next level.

SNOWFLAKE DRESDEN (tutor Catriona Brown).

10:15 am – 4 pm, Saturday 18th November, 2017. £35, excluding materials.

snowflake dresden

In this class you will be making a ‘snowflake dresden’, an interesting variation on a traditional Dresden block utilising different sizes of wedge to create a snowflake shape. You can machine or hand appliqué your finished snowflake onto a backing fabric, add a hexagon center and start hand quilting to enhance the snowflake appearance of the block. This is a lovely wintry pattern that is suitable for Christmas – ‘Wintry’ rather than ‘Chrismassy’. Add to your holiday decor or give it as a gift. If you want to make your square into a cushion, you can complete this at home, alternatively our ‘Finish your Cushion’ class will teach you everything you need to know about inserting zips and piping.

This class requires a little more confidence in accurate rotary cutting and machine sewing and so is not suitable for beginners.

FINISH YOUR CUSHION (tutor Alison Buckle).

10:15 – 4 pm, Saturday 2nd December, 2017. £35, excluding materials.

Cushions are a great way to add colour and style to your home as well as being lovely to snuggle up with on the sofa or bed. And they make a great Christmas gift for someone special. In this class we will cover inserting zips, making a cushion with no zip, inserting piping or binding and options for other accessories. Everything you need to know to turn your panel, pieced square or other lovely project into a beautiful and useful cushion.

This project is suitable for beginners with basic sewing machine skills.

CHRISTMAS GIFT FUN DAY (Tutor Catriona Brown).

10:15 -4 pm, Saturday 16th December, 2017. £30.

This day is designed as more of a communal working day with an instructor coming round and helping you with what you’re working on. There will be six different Christmas Gift patterns provided and the aim will be for every person to complete 2-4 gifts. We’ve done our best to select reasonably gender neutral patterns that will make good last minute gifts for anyone you’ve been struggling to buy for. The planned patterns are: a hot water bottle cover; a zippy pouch suitable for use as a wash bag; a small purse; key rings using fabric scraps, leather and rivets; oven gloves and a Christmas Stocking. We also have several panels available in the shop that make place mats, xmas decorations and more that we can help you put together on this day. Everyone appreciates beautiful hand made gifts!

This is a relaxed and fun club where people can work on their own machine or hand sewing projects. It is a drop in session but the club tends to be quite busy, so phone in advance to check that there is space if you’d like to come.
